Space: Death Star Not Built

Photonic Space

Death Star Petition rejected. As widely reported including Discovery News the petition to the US government to commission a Death Star has been rejected. I know its not quite new news but its big news and I wanted it in this new blog anyway!

The reasons given by the US government include:

  • The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
  • The Administration does not support blowing up planets.
  • Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?
Photonics Editor: Why is this a positive story? Firstly good on the US government for using a much greater weapon than the Death Star: Humour (or is it Humor?), a much more powerful weapon and one which those who are set on wrecking things (a) don't have much and (b) are afraid of. A ray of hope perhaps? Secondly, all is not lost because a new petition I am told is going the rounds of social media to demand the building of a USS Enterprise. That's progress!
